With the military offensive to take back the Iraqi city of Mosul from the terrorist group ISIL now underway, humanitarians are in "a race against time" to meet the needs of civilians expected to flee the fighting.

That's according to UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the country Lise Grande who has called for greater international solidarity and support.

It is estimated that up to one million residents could try to escape from Mosul but Ms Grande said humanitarians currently stand ready to assist about 60,000 people.

Dianne Penn asked her how the Mosul operation compares to previous humanitarian operations.
