"I am here essentially to listen and to learn;" that's the message that the UN Secretary-General-designate brought to delegates during a special meeting of the 193-Member State General Assembly on Wednesday.

António Guterres, who was officially selected as the organization's 9th Secretary-General on 14 October addressed the Assembly in New York and provided more details about his plans fr taking up the position as the world's top diplomat

Daniel Dickinson reports.

António Guterres announced the composition of his five-member "transition team" shortly after being confirmed in the top job.

On Wednesday, Mr Guterres was accompanied by his senior advisor, Kyung-wha Kang, currently the UN's Deputy Emergency Coordinator.

He said listening to the views and expectations of the delegates was important to him.

"As the President just said, I am here essentially to listen and to learn. And I believe I tried to be an interpreter of what I heard in the audition with the General Assembly in relation to the concerns of the membership, trying to gather a transition team that at the same time be competent, have gender equality, gender balance and regional diversity. And I hope this will be the symbol how we all would like to see the UN working at all levels."

The UN-Secretary-General-designate will take up his new position on 1 January next year.

He will replace the current Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who is stepping down after ten years in the job.
