The right of citizens around the world to access information about how they are governed is "at the heart of open and healthy societies".

That's according to the UN Special Representative in Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, applauding the launch of a national campaign to improve public awareness of their rights to information.

The UN Cultural Organization's International Day for Universal Access to Information is observed on 28 September.

Zainab Mohaqqeq spoke to UNESCO's Ricardo Grassi, who is based in the Afghan capital Kabul.
