Expansion of a food voucher system in Yemen has allowed the World Food Programme (WFP) to reach 55,000 people in a hard-to-reach area of Taiz city during the past month.

Through the project, WFP supplied families with vouchers which they used to get wheat grain, vegetable oil, salt, sugar and other food items from local suppliers.

The UN agency described it as "an effective way" to address the challenge of access while also speeding up the delivery of food assistance.

Taiz has been gripped by severe food insecurity due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen between forces loyal to the President and rebels known as Houthis.

WFP Country Director in Yemen Purnima Kashyap told Reem Abaza why they abandoned the idea of using trucks to bring in food aid.
