Children flee Central America to escape gang violence, poverty

Every month, thousands of children from Central America flee to the United States to escape gang violence and poverty, a new report by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has found. Some are kidnapped, trafficked, raped or killed along the way. They are from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras which have some of the world's highest murder rates. More funds needed to protect ‘future generations from the scourge of war’

A UN fund which supports countries emerging from conflict, needs an extra US$70 million just to keep up with current demand, according to a senior UN official. The UN Peace Building Commission was established in 2005 to serve post-conflict countries in need of aid, such as Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burundi and Colombia. In recent years there has been a shift towards so-called “preventative” peacebuilding. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, explained the commission’s importance to Paulina Kubiak.

Climate change is not a "vague concept" but a reality which is having an impact on people everywhere. That's the opinion of Patricia Espinosa Cantellano who has been appointed Executive Director of the UN climate change secretariat, known as UNFCCC. The veteran diplomat from Mexico was in Paris last December for the signing of the landmark international treaty which seeks to limit global temperature rises to below two degrees Celsius. Ms Espinosa told Dianne Penn what she hopes to accomplish in the face of what she described as "this big, big challenge" for the planet.
