Intense fighting continued on Monday in the western part of the Syrian city of Aleppo, putting hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned.

Opposition groups launched the offensive on Sunday in efforts to break a de facto siege on the east, where the UN and its partners have been calling for access to roughly 300,000 people trapped there, nearly half of them children.

Dianne Penn spoke to Kieran Dwyer, UNICEF Chief of Communications in Syria, who's based in the capital, Damascus.
