Hope for Syria talks “towards the end of August”

The prospect of fresh talks on Syria beginning in a matter of weeks edged a little closer this week after a high-level meeting between representatives from Russia, the United States and the United Nations in Geneva. Speaking after the encounter, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura told journalists that he aimed to pursue a third round of Intra-Syrian talks “towards the end of August.” Daniel Johnson reports from Geneva.

"Think critically" to counter violent extremism, youth advised

Emotional vulnerability is making young people prime targets for recruitment by violent extremists. That's one of the messages to emerge from a panel on youth and countering violent extremism, at UN Headquarters in early July. Youth Civil Activism Network, or YouthCAN, led the discussion, which demonstrated ways in which included ways in which positive messaging could help reach young people at school and through social media. Ivana Gabalova, a 26-year-old YouthCAN activist from the Netherlands, explained to Laura Jarriel why it was important for youth to get involved in networks.

More action needed to reduce burden of noncommunicable diseases

Heart disease, lung disease, cancer and diabetes represent the largest cause of death of people under the age of 70 years worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).These four non-communicable diseases (NCDs) killed nearly 40 million people in 2012, many of them in developed countries.WHO has just released a report which calls for countries to speed up action to address the factors behind these conditions, which threaten global development efforts.To find out more, Dianne Penn spoke to Melanie Cowan, a Technical Officer in their Department of Prevention of NCDs.
