Syria envoy calls for US, Russia action on talks

Hopes of fresh talks to decide the future of Syria depend on the United States and Russia doing more to make them happen, UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said Thursday.

The veteran negotiator insisted that preparations for renewed discussions have been continuing since the last round of UN-led talks, often referred to as Geneva II, ended in April.

But he said that the time is not right for them to take place yet, amid escalating clashes in the war-torn country and ongoing humanitarian access problems.
