There are "very positive stories" emerging from West Africa but "serious challenges" continue, that require greater UN support.

That's the view of Mohamed Ibn Chambas, UN Special Representative and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

The special political mission established earlier this year works to prevent conflict and support efforts to consolidate peace and democratic governance in countries emerging from conflict or political crisis.

He was briefing the Security Council for the first time on the UN's work in West Africa and the Sahel, and he praised the "hugely successful" elections that have taken place across the region.

Jocelyne Sambira asked him to outline his key message to Council members on Monday.
