Praise for US law that strengthens food assistance globally

A new law in the United States aimed at boosting global food assistance programmes has drawn praise from two UN agencies.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) said the legislation will have a "dramatic impact" on the lives of people throughout the world.

The US Congress passed the Global Food Security Act (GFSA) earlier this month.

It supports initiatives which focus on developing agriculture, assisting small-scale food producers, and improving nutrition, especially for women and children.

Murder of Mexican journalist condemned by UNESCO

The killing of a journalist in Mexico has been condemned by the Director-General of the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.

Pedro Tamayo Rosas, a reporter for the daily newspapers Al Calor Politico and Piñero de la Cuenca, was shot on 20 July outside his home in Tierra Blanca, in eastern Mexico.

He had been under police protection since he began receiving threats in January this year.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, urged the authorities to investigate the killing of Mr Tamayo Rosas and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"Guns must not be allowed to circumscribe press freedom and freedom of information, both of which are essential for democracy and rule of law," she said.

Start of Summer Fun Weeks for Palestinian children

More than 165,000 children across the Gaza Strip will participate in three weeks of summertime activities organized by the UN agency that assists Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

Summer Fun Weeks are a chance for these youngsters to play, learn and express themselves, according to the agency.

UNRWA said the event provides Palestinian refugee children with a chance to "alleviate life stress and pressures."

It also offers about 2,200 short-term job opportunities for Gaza youth.

Summer Fun Weeks kicked off on Saturday and will run through 12 August.
