"Fully support" democratically elected government in Turkey: General Assembly President

The international community is being asked by the UN General Assembly President to fully back the democratically elected government in Turkey.

Mogens Lykketoft made the call after groups in the armed forces tried to seize power by force late on Friday.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

Deploring the loss of lives during the failed putsch, the UN General Assembly President denounced Friday's attempt to overthrow Turkey's leaders.

According to media reports, thousands of military personnel have been detained.

In a statement released on Saturday, Mogens Lykketoft urged the international community to "fully support" the democratically elected government and the rule of law in Turkey.
