ISIL “committing genocide against Yazidis”

Extremists of the ISIL terrorist group have committed genocide against the Yazidi people caught up in the Syria conflict, UN investigators have said. Paulo Pinheiro, who heads a report into abuses in the war-torn country, said that "every Yazidi man, woman and child" captured by the group has been subjected to "the most horrific of atrocities". Daniel Johnson has this report from Geneva.

Debris removal "problem" two months after Ecuador earthquake

The removal of debris following the catastrophic earthquake in Ecuador two months ago remains a "problem" for which it's difficult to attract donor funding, according to a United Nations advisor on disaster risk management in the South American nation. More than 650 people died in the magnitude 7.8 tremor which struck on 16 April in the north-west of the country. Over 1000 buildings were destroyed and more than 80 severely damaged. Some 28,000 people are still living in temporary accommodation.
