The UN Secretary-General says he is standing by his report on the plight of children caught in various conflicts, including in Yemen.

Ban Ki-moon was speaking to the press in New York on Thursday following an informal briefing to ambassadors on a review of UN peace operations.

The Yemen conflict pits Shia rebels, known as Houthis, against Government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition, which began air strikes in March 2015.

The UN chief observed that there has been "fierce reaction" to removing coalition countries from those parties listed in the report as having recruited, killed, maimed or otherwise harmed children in armed conflicts.

Following Mr Ban's remarks, the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia responded by taking questions from journalists.
