More than 60 international celebrities are calling on governments to take action for refugees.

Stars such Australian actress Cate Blanchett, the model Alek Wek from South Sudan and musician Juanes from Colombia are urging people worldwide to join them in standing with those who have been displaced due to conflict and persecution.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

The #WithRefugees campaign has been launched by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

In a video message, the constellation of global stars along with refugees and aid workers relay a simple message:

"We stand with refugees, please stand with us."

They are appealing for people everywhere to sign a petition to show their support for families forced to flee their homes.

They are asking governments to ensure that "every refugee child has an education, every refugee family has somewhere safe to live and every refugee can work or learn skills to make a positive contribution to their community."

The petition will be delivered ahead of a UN General Assembly meeting in September on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants.
