Countering terrorist narratives through solidarity and shared humanity

Within weeks of the terrorist attacks in Paris last November, there were more than one million views of videos praising the gunmen and suicide bombers…that's what the UN Security Council has been told. The 15-member Council held an open debate on ways to counter what it calls "the narratives and ideologies of terrorism," particularly focussing on the internet. Dianne Penn reports.

World Humanitarian Summit represents “massive opportunity” to deliver

Helping displaced people to “survive and thrive” is one key objective of the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, later this month. That's the view of the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien. More than 20,000 participants from over 150 countries are expected to attend the summit, which seeks to address massive humanitarian needs and suffering across the globe. Some 60 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and instability, while natural disasters have affected nearly 220 million people annually over the past two decades. Elena Vapnitchnaia has been talking to Stephen O’Brien.

He performed at UN Headquarters in New York during the on-going Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Janie Cangelosi has the story.
