The UN official overseeing peace talks on Syria has expressed his "cautious" hope for the re-launch of a cessation of hostilities in the war-ravaged country.

Staffan de Mistura briefed journalists in Moscow on Tuesday alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Warring sides in Syria agreed to the ceasefire in late February.

The United Nations has expressed concern that recent bloody attacks in the city of Aleppo, among other incidents, indicate a return to a level of violence prior to the start of the truce.

The UN envoy was in the Russian capital where he held consultations with the authorities on the ongoing Syrian negotiations.

Staffan de Mistura expressed hope that the cessation of hostilities would be re-launched "perhaps in the next few hours."

He stressed, however, that "we have to be cautious."

He told journalists that Syrians no longer want to hear bombs, rockets or shelling.
