Mountain areas of the world are crucial for the "survival of the planet" and also home to some of the poorest and hungriest communities on earth.

That's the stark assessment of Thomas Hofer, who is the Mountains and Water Team leader for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

A new FAO report on the vulnerability of mountain peoples to food insecurity, being presented at UN headquarters on Friday, shows that conditions have deteriorated rapidly, with one in two routinely going hungry.

Matthew Wells spoke to Mr Hofer who outlined the complex challenges facing mountain dwellers, and their increasingly vulnerable environment.
