Côte d'Ivoire peacekeeping mission to close

The mandate of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Côte d'Ivoire is to be extended for a final period, the UN Security Council has decided.

The 15-member Council adopted a resolution on Thursday which will prolong the mission, known as UNOCI, until the end of June next year.

Its responsibilities will then be taken over by the Government of Côte d'Ivoire and the UN country team.

UNOCI was established in 2004 to oversee the implementation of a peace agreement following the end of civil war two years earlier.

Measures recommended to fight deadly livestock disease

Control measures to combat a fatal livestock disease which is continuing to extend its global reach have been recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The UN agency said that the disease, known by its French name, Peste des Petits Ruminants, or PPR, is now present in 76 countries.

Georgia recently reported its first-ever case while a new outbreak has occurred in the Maldives.

PPR is a viral disease affecting goat and sheep and has an 80 per cent fatality rate.

In the past two decades, it has spread rapidly, mostly in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, which are home to some 80 per cent of the world’s 2.1 billion goats and sheep.

The disease causes more than US$2 billion in losses each year.

Cash cards launched for refugees in Iraq

A digital cash card programme to provide food assistance to thousands of displaced Iraqi families and Syrian refugees across Iraq has been launched by the World Food Programme (WFP).

The electronic cards, known as SCOPE cards, allow people to choose and buy their own food from local shops.

WFP says the system enables the agency to provide food assistance in a flexible manner to adapt to the rapidly changing situation in the country.

Over four million people are displaced or are refugees in Iraq.
