Humanitarian support in Syria interrupted by continuous conflict

Intense armed conflict between extremist armed groups inside Syria's Yarmouk refugee camp has interrupted the delivery of vital humanitarian support to civilians who are in what the UN has described as "desperate" need.

Yarmouk, which is a neighbourhood of the Syrian capital Damascus has been home to Palestinian refugees since before the conflict in the country began in 2011.

The UN agency which supports the refugees, UNRWA, said renewed fighting in early April has aggravated shortages of food and clean water for the approximately 6,000 civilian families still living in Yarmouk.

Women and girls still at risk 2 years after Nigeria abductions

Women and girls in north-east Nigeria are still at risk two years after over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in the region, the UN has said.

The outlawed Boko Haram group abducted the girls from a school in the town of Chibok in April 2014.

Boko Haram's captives are not only often forced into sexual slavery or marriage but are sometimes forced to carry out suicide bombings, according to women and girls who have escaped.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that globally in 2014, 85 per cent of suicide attacks by women were in Nigeria.

Eradication of polio "closer than ever"

The eradication of polio across the world is "closer than ever" according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

It follows the announcement of a switch by 150 countries from the tOPV to the bOPV vaccine.

The extensive use of tOPV has been largely responsible for reducing polio cases by over 350,000 in 1988 to just 74 in 2015.

There are just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where polio is now endemic.

(bOPV), protects against the remaining two wild polio strains, types 1 and 3.
