The global insurance industry has been urged by the UN Secretary-General to "decarbonize" its investments in order to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

The call from Ban Ki-moon came at a meeting at UN headquarters focused on building resilience to climate change.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

Speaking to executives from the insurance industry, Mr Ban said they had played an instrumental role in mobilizing momentum for the climate change agreement signed by world leaders in Paris in December.

He underscored that the industry will be faced with mounting claims if climate change worsens.

And Mr Ban added that insurance companies could contribute more to reducing greenhouse gasses.

Next week, world leaders will gather in New York to formally sign the climate change deal that they agreed to in Paris last December.
