Never before has an "effective United Nations been so necessary."

That's according to Natalia Gherman, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova.

Ms Gherman was the third candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General to appear at the Informal General Assembly Dialogues on Wednesday.

The briefings, where candidates state their case and take questions from Member States and civil society groups, mark the beginning of the process to select the next UN chief.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

The General Assembly-led process has been described as a job interview in front of the whole world.

On Wednesday three candidates explained why they are best suited to become the next and ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Apart from Ms Gherman, Danilo Turk from Slovenia, and, Vesna Pusić from Croatia, also made their case.

Ms Gherman, who was the Deputy Prime-Minister and Foreign Minister of Moldova explained why she put her name forward for the post.

“I decided to become the candidate for the position of the Secretary-General because I'm firmly convinced that the effect of the United Nations has never been so necessary or so demanded, whether working to end poverty, defend the scourge of war, respect the human rights, or saving our planet.”

There are nine candidates in the running; four women and five men; the final round of briefings takes place on Thursday.
