Syria envoy "hopes Russia withdrawal" will help talks

Russia’s surprise decision to reduce military operations in Syria could help the peace talks now underway in Geneva, UN negotiator Staffan de Mistura has said. In a statement delivered on Tuesday, de Mistura described the move as “significant” and said he hoped it would have a positive impact on the negotiations. Here’s Daniel Johnson in Geneva.

Singer Michael Bolton raises his voice for women and girls

American singer Michael Bolton has conquered audiences worldwide with his powerful ballads and heartfelt love songs. The man with the soulful sound is using his voice to support the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in working to end harmful practices against women and girls, such as Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. Dianne Penn spoke to the multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter ahead of his performance in the UN General Assembly Hall on Wednesday evening.

"Tragic and shameful" that Syrians can't go home, says Jolie-Pitt

Syria's war has reached another "grim milestone," as the country marks five years of war, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR. An estimated 5 million Syrians have found refuge in neighboring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. UNHCR's Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie-Pitt spent Tuesday visiting refugees in Lebanon. Jocelyne Sambira has the story.
