The Syrian people have every right to have doubts about the peace talks in Geneva, but there are many reasons to believe they will be successful, UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday.

In an appeal to all Syrians at the end of the first phase of UN-led negotiations in Geneva, de Mistura said that he knew they had suffered more than anyone could ever imagine.

But he said that the facts were that the cessation of hostilities was still largely holding, more humanitarian aid was getting through, and the groundwork had been laid for serious talks on a political transition.
