Boutros "broke barriers" at the UN, says Ban Ki-moon

Former Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali "broke barriers" and new ground during his single five-year term. That's the view of the current UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, who paid tribute to the late veteran diplomat from Egypt, at a formal event inside the UN General Assembly on Thursday. Here's Jocelyne Sambira.

The UN-led task force responsible for getting aid into besieged areas in Syria is now planning air-drops over the city of Deir ez-Zour – currently in the hands of ISIL terrorists. It's also calling for access to many millions of people in hard-to-reach places in the war-torn country. On Thursday, the task force confirmed that aid had been successfully delivered to 80,000 people on Wednesday in five besieged areas. But that is only enough aid for a month, and around 480,000 civilians remain trapped. Daniel Johnson has more.

"Concrete actions" by all the warring parties in Afghanistan are urgently needed to help save civilian lives there. That's according to Danielle Bell, Director of Human Rights for the UN mission in the country, UNAMA. She was speaking after the release of new figures on civilian casualties, which show that 2015 was the worst year so far for deaths and injuries. Afghan government forces have been battled militant groups such as the Taliban for control of the war-torn country for more than a decade. Hamed Haleemi asked Ms Bell for the details.
