Faith groups fighting terrorist ideology that misuses religion need more empowerment from bodies such as the UN.

That's the view of one African expert on religion and conflict who's been attending a UN-sponsored symposium on The Role of Religion and Faith-Based Organizations in International Affairs.

Kenya-based Dr Mustafa Ali is a director of the faith-based, youth-focussed organization Arigatou International, and was one of the speakers exploring the link between religion, violence and extremism.

Matthew Wells asked him why violent extremism on all continents was being so heavily fuelled by faith-based ideology.
