Aid agencies appeal for humanitarian pauses in Syria conflict

Humanitarian agencies gathered in Geneva to plead for an end to the fighting in Syria so that they can support millions of people in need. The UN estimates that 13.5 million Syrians require humanitarian aid and the appeal was made after the announcement of the start of the latest round of peace talks. The UN agencies and their partners are calling for "humanitarian pauses" so that they can bring food and water to desperate citizens. Dianne Penn reports.

Israelis and Palestinians must "act now" to find peace

Israelis and Palestinians must "act now" to prevent the possibility of peace from slipping away. That was the message from the UN Secretary-General who went before the Security Council to make an impassioned plea for both sides to work toward a two-state solution. Veronica Reeves has the story.

WHO to hold emergency meeting on Zika virus

The Zika virus is "spreading explosively" in the Americas, with cases in 23 countries and territories, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports. The virus is spread by mosquitoes and the UN agency suspects that it may be linked to certain deformities that affect newborns. WHO will convene an emergency meeting on the 1st of February to determine whether it is of global concern. The Zika virus gets its name from the forest in Uganda where it was first isolated from a monkey in 1947.  For years, only monkeys were affected, although it did cause a mild disease in humans. Daniel Dickinson has the story.
