"This one cannot fail": the words of the UN's Syria envoy in an impassioned video message ahead of peace-talks due to begin on Friday.

Staffan de Mistura appealed for Syrians everywhere to raise their voice, and encourage the warring parties attending talks in Geneva, to finally put an end to nearly six years of civil war.

Matthew Wells reports.

The UN-sponsored peace talks between the warring parties and governments around the region are due to begin on Friday.

Mr de Mistura said the he hoped his message of support would be heard by Syrians around the world.

After so many failed attempts, Syrian civilians needed to tell politicians and those engaged in fighting, that enough was enough.

"You have seen enough conferences; two of them have already taken place. This one cannot fail. We have heard your voices, we have heard when you have been telling us so many times, wherever we have met you, you men, women and children of Syria saying, enough…killing, murdering, torturing, prisons. Enough buildings being destroyed, enough bombing my city where I am and I don't know who is bombing me."

He added that the conference was an opportunity not to be missed, and that the United Nations would always stand by the Syrian people.

With more than 250,000 dead, and millions displaced around the world, it was time he said, to bring "stability, peace and dignity" back to Syria.
