Funding urgently needed to help Palestine refugees

Some US$ 817 million is urgently needed to help Palestine refugees in Syria and elsewhere.

The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has launched the emergency appeal for Syria and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, saying the relentless effects of conflict, occupation and blockades have resulted in "appalling suffering".

Thousands of Palestine refugees in Syria remain trapped in areas of on-going conflict, according to UNRWA, while tens of thousands have fled to Lebanon and Jordan.

In the Occupied Territory, some 830,000 people in Gaza are now said to be reliant on humanitarian aid for survival.

Meal-sharing initiative launched by World Food Programme meets its goal

Two months after its global launch, the World Food Programme's (WFP) smartphone application has met its goal of giving 20,000 Syrian refugee children in Jordan a nutritious school meal for one year.

The ShareTheMeal application works by allowing smartphone users to donate to money to select WFP programmes.

Starting today money raised through the application will be used to help mothers, children and pregnant women in Homs, one of the hardest hit cities in Syria.
