Condemnation follows bombing that kills tourists, others in Turkey

A terrorist bombing in Istanbul, Turkey that killed at least 10 people, many of them German tourists, has been met with condemnation from the head of the United Nations.

At least 15 others were injured in the attack, which happened near the famed Blue Mosque.

Stéphane Dujarric is Spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

"The Secretary-General expects the perpetrators of this attack to be swiftly brought to justice. He sends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well to the people and governments of Turkey and Germany."

South-east Asian region marks five years polio-free

More than five years have passed without any new cases of the polio virus in the south-east Asian region

The World Health Organization (WHO) called the milestone a "remarkable achievement" and said countries in the region had made "commendable efforts" in stepping up vigilance against polio.

The last case of polio was in West Bengal, India in 2011.

WHO noted that globally, polio transmission is at its lowest level ever, but said that efforts needed to continue until the disease is fully eradicated in all parts of the world.

Attacks on power plant in Libya lead to "distress and deprivation"

Recent attacks on a power plant in Benghazi, Libya has resulted in "further distress and deprivation" for people in the area.

That's according to a top UN official in Libya, who said the incidents had left people without power for hours at a time.  The attacks have been met with condemnation, particularly as hospitals struggle to carry out basic functions.

Community services and ordinary households have also been negatively impacted.
