The New Year represents an opportunity for Libyans to build a strong, united and prosperous country, according to the head of the UN mission there.

Martin Kobler said the international community will continue to support efforts towards creating a unity Government, as outlined in a peace deal signed last month.

The Libyan Political Agreement seeks to end more than four years of civil conflict, with two rival governments fighting for control of the country.

Dianne Penn reports.

Mr Kobler's comments came in a New Year's message to the Libyan people.

In it, he described the Libyan Political Agreement as "a ray of hope."

He said 2016 will be filled with both hard work and opportunity for Libyans.

Those opportunities will include rediscovering peace, and with a single unity Government.

The country will also restart its transition to a democratic state based on the principles of peace, prosperity, freedom and human rights for all, he added.

Mr Kobler called on "all peace-loving Libyans" to embrace the peace deal and to support the Government of National Accord.
