Winter grants for Palestine refugee children in Lebanon

Palestinian refugee children in Lebanon are getting help to cope with the winter cold thanks to the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF.

The agency is providing caregivers with US$40 winter grants for each eligible child through a programme run by the UN agency that works with Palestine refugees, UNRWA.

UNICEF is one of the agency's largest partners, having provided nearly US$7 million in cash and in-kind contributions over the past two years.

Japan supports UN agency efforts to help Syrians in Lebanon

A US$2 million emergency grant from Japan will assist two UN agencies as they respond to the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon.

Half of the funding will support host communities through a joint initiative between Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The remaining funding will allow the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to run community centres and refugee volunteer outreach programmes.

Lebanon is hosting more than one million Syrians who have fled the conflict in their homeland.

UN award celebrates innovation in tourism

An initiative to fight child sexual exploitation in tourism in Colombia and a website promoting travel in East African countries are among the 17 finalists for a UN award that celebrates excellence and innovation in tourism.

Finalists will present their projects and share their expertise during a forum organized by the UN World Tourism Organization to be held next month in Madrid, Spain.

A ceremony will be held two days later to announce winners in four categories: public policy and governance, research and technology, enterprises and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
