As the world prepares to welcome a new year, people around the globe are also preparing to usher in a new development era.

Following its adoption by world leaders last September, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be officially launched on 1January.

Contained within that Agenda are 17 specific goals that will guide development efforts for the next 15 years.

Veronica Reeves has more.

The development goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are described as both "bold" and "ambitious".

They aim to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing humanity, with particular focus on extreme poverty and hunger.

Environmental issues, including the adverse effects of climate change were taken into account in crafting the goals.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the Agenda a "to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success".

He said the goals represented a "shared vision for humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and people."
