"Step up to the plate" Parliamentarians in Burundi are urged

International concern continues to mount over Burundi, where a months' long political crisis has led to hundreds of deaths, and forced thousands to flee to neighbouring countries. The situation began in April after President Pierre N-kurun-ziza sought a contested third term.The UN on Monday warned of the possibility of genocide while the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is deeply worried about reports of incitement to violence against political opposition groups. Cristina Silveiro has been speaking to IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong, who's urging Burundi's parliamentarians to "step up to the plate and encourage dialogue".

Women are playing a key role in Mali's recovery from violent conflict, according to the UN's head of humanitarian operations. The government and rebels had been fighting for control of the West African country, but a peace deal was signed in June this year. Around 3.1 million people are still in need of relief assistance. John Ging, the UN humanitarian office, OCHA‘s, Operations Director, has just returned from a visit to Mali. Daniel Dickinson asked him to describe the contribution women have been making.

From a failed state to a country that is "coming together." That's UN Special Representative Nicholas Kay's latest assessment of Somalia. The envoy was addressing the Security Council in New York, which on Monday, unanimously agreed to give more international support to the country, as it gears up for elections next year, while also dealing with the scourge of terrorism, Dianne Penn has more.
