European health ministers come together on refugee and migrant health

European health ministers are meeting in Rome to focus on the health of refugees and migrants arriving in the region.  The World Health Organization (WHO) organized the meeting in Italy with leading health officials to promote a common approach in meeting the health needs of vulnerable refugees.

So far this year more than 700,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Europe.

WHO says up to 5 per cent of those need urgent medical attention upon arrival for issues ranging from hypothermia to burns to pregnancy or delivery-related illnesses.

Nigerian government urged to stop forced evictions

The Nigerian government has been urged to put an end to forced evictions in the country.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to housing, Leilani Farha, expressed concern about the trend of forcing people out of their homes, leaving thousands without a place to live.

The UN expert said more than 30,000 people could lose their homes, businesses and livelihoods if demolitions in parts of Lagos continue.

A similar set of unlawful evictions took place in 2013, displacing more than 9,000 people.  Studies indicate that one out of three people evicted at that time are still homeless.

Humanitarian situation in South Sudan continues to deteriorate

The humanitarian situation in South Sudan continues to deteriorate, according to agencies on the ground.  An estimated 7.5 million people are now food insecure in the country.

An unprecedented outbreak of malaria is now affecting nearly all states.  More than 2.3 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the conflict began.

Meanwhile, the UN has strongly condemned the armed robbery of an NGO compound in Juba, where aid workers were held at gunpoint.
