Reconciliation “imperative” to Sri Lanka’s future

The reconciliation between former foes in Sri Lanka is "imperative" to the future of the country according to the island nation's president. Sri Lanka is recovering from more than 25 years of civil conflict in which an estimated 70,000 people died. Daniel Dickinson has more details.

September and October are busy months at the UN when the high-level debate in the UN General Assembly takes place. All 193 UN member countries have the opportunity to share their perspectives on matters of global concern. One recurrent theme this year has been combatting terrorism and violent extremism. Dianne Penn reports on the perspectives of the Heads of State of Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam and Pakistan.

Malala addresses world leaders: “keep your promises”

The Pakistani teenager and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, came to the world’s attention after an attempted assassination by the outlawed Taliban terrorist group. She had been advocating for the right of girls to attend school. Malala was also at the UN where she spoke prior to the start of the General Assembly.  She called on global leaders to do more to both protect and empower young people. Veronica Reeves has more.

Malala will make world leaders listen to the voice of youth

Malala remains an inspiration for many people across the globe. But in her homeland, a small minority continue to resent her. That's according to Jalal Awan, who's also from Pakistan. Jalal is studying at a university in the United States and he came to the UN to hear Malala speak. Elena Vapnitchnaia asked Jalal for his impressions of Malala's speech.
