The UN mission in Libya, UNSMIL, is calling for calm following reports of a deadly helicopter crash west of Tripoli on Tuesday.

All passengers on board, who included military personnel, were reportedly killed.

Dianne Penn reports.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has issued a statement urging all sides in the country to exercise restraint in the aftermath of the crash.

Rival groups have been battling in Libya since the overthrow of former leader Muammar Al-Qadhafi in 2011.

UNSMIL recalled that the area west of Tripoli has been relatively calm in recent months due to local ceasefire and reconciliation efforts.

It urged local leaders and those with influence on the ground to immediately work to prevent an escalation of tensions.

The UN mission also called for an open and transparent investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
