UN calls for swift investigation into "deplorable" attack on exile camp in Iraq

Authorities in Iraq are being urged by the UN Secretary-General to investigate a deadly attack on a camp for asylum seekers located in the capital, Baghdad.

Camp Hurriya— or Camp Liberty, in English—was hit by rockets on Thursday, killing 26 residents as well as members of the Iraqi Security Forces who were located nearby.

The Secretary-General said there can be no impunity for such attacks.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has also condemned the attack, calling it a "deplorable act."

Camp Hurriya, a former US military site, houses around 2,200 people, mostly members of an Iranian militant group.

UNHCR has been working since 2011 to relocate them to other countries.

UN unveils new Fast-Track strategy to combat HIV and AIDS

Over the next five years, the world should see fewer than 500,000 new HIV infections, fewer than 500,000 people dying from AIDS-related causes, and an end to HIV-related discrimination.

That's the goal of UNAIDS, the UN agency working to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS.

UNAIDS has adopted a strategy called Fast-Track in order to meet these objectives by 2020.

Its aims include reducing barriers faced by young people in protecting themselves from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Fast-Track also seeks to address what UNAIDS describes as the "deplorably low treatment coverage" for children living with HIV.

Good urban design focus of World Cities Day

The role of urban design in building sustainable cities is being celebrated by the United Nations.

In a message marking World Cities Day, observed on 31 October, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said good urban design can help tackle climate change and reduce the impacts of disaster.

More than half of the global population now lives in cities and the UN says this number should reach about five billion within the next 15 years.

The challenges posed by rapid urbanization are also addressed in the new Sustainable Development Goals adopted by world leaders on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September.

A UN conference on housing and sustainable development is slated for Ecuador in October 2016.
