Peaceful elections in Guinea welcomed by UN Secretary-General

A peaceful first round of presidential elections in Guinea has been welcomed by the UN Secretary-General.

The UN chief has encouraged all political leaders and stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed on election day as the country awaits the final results.

In the run-up to the vote, clashes between supporters of the ruling party and members of the opposition left dozens dead.

More girls in school, but many still left behind

More countries have achieved gender parity in both primary and secondary education, but many other nations are still falling short. That's the finding of a new Gender Report released by the UN as part of the International Day of the Girl Child.

While the number of countries that have achieved gender parity has risen from 36 to 62 worldwide – no countries in sub-Saharan Africa have reached the goal.

The report shows that about 62 million girls continue to be denied their basic right to education.

UN experts call for moratorium on genetic "editing"

A panel of scientists, philosophers, lawyers and government ministers has called for a temporary ban on genetic "editing" calling for a wide public debate on genetic modification of human DNA.

The UN's International Bioethics Committee said that scientific advances in genome editing hold great promise, but also raise serious concerns.

The Committee says particular precautions must be taken and called for a moratorium on the procedure.

Iran marks 70 years since founding of United Nations

A series of events has taken place in Iran, marking 70 years since the founding of the United Nations.

Speaking in Tehran, the UN Deputy Secretary-General commended Iran for hosting millions of refugees from Afghanistan and for making great strides in meeting its Millennium Development Goals.

The country marked the October 24 anniversary ahead of other countries due to upcoming Islamic holidays.
