Planned UN humanitarian relief for Syria postponed.

A planned humanitarian intervention by the United Nations in Syria has been postponed as part of the implementation of a ceasefire agreement, the UN has confirmed.

People in four localities were due to receive aid but it has been put on hold due to the recent surge in military activities there.

Here's the UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.

"The Syrian population in these affected areas is waiting for this agreement to be implemented so that needed humanitarian assistance can be provided to end their long suffering. The UN calls on all concerned parties to fulfill their responsibilities in the protection of civilians and reach the necessary understandings in order to implement this agreement as soon as possible."

US must tackle "appalling toll" of gun violence.

The United States has been urged by the UN chief to take the necessary action to reduce what he called the "appalling toll in human life that gun violence is taking on American society."

In a statement following the mass-shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, Ban Ki-moon said he was deeply saddened by the killings.

Ten people died, including the gunman, in the community college shootings.

Mr Ban acknowledged that President Barack Obama has consistently demonstrated his commitment to address what the Secretary-General called "this scourge."

Re-instate a ban on the death penalty, urges UN.

Pakistan has been urged by a group of United Nations human rights experts to reinstate a moratorium on the death penalty.

It is estimated that 8,300 people are currently on death row in Pakistan.

Hundreds of them were reportedly sentenced for offences committed as children.

The call to halt the death penalty was made by independent experts after the execution by hanging, of Ansar Iqbal.

He was just 15 years old when arrested and condemned to death.
