Chemical industry told not to cheat on global goals

Achieving ambitious sustainable development goals is possible, but "cheating" like car giant Volkswagen is unacceptable, a UN environment chief said Friday.

Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Environment Programme, (UNEP), called the German manufacturer's efforts to give misleading vehicle emissions data a "scandal".

But he said that the episode could help meet ambitious sustainable development goals by providing a "global wake-up call" to the automotive industry on better air quality .
