World leaders are gathering at UN headquarters in New York for the annual high-level meeting of the General Assembly.

Speeches by UN Member States begin on Monday morning and conclude six days later.

Daniel Dickinson reports

Traditionally, Brazil is the first country to kick off the annual high-level debate and this year is no different, with President Dilma Rousseff due to begin her speech at around 9 am local time.

US President Barack Obama will follow. The heads of state of China, Iran and Russia are also due to address the Assembly in the morning session.

Each of the 193 Member States of the UN has the opportunity to speak and each will, naturally, decide which themes to focus on.

The migrant crisis, conflict in the Middle East and Africa, climate change and the new global development goals are expected to feature prominently throughout the week.

And there will no doubt also be birthday wishes for the UN itself, which this year celebrates the 70th anniversary of its founding.
