Time to help people "live their dreams", says IPU president

It is time to help people live their dreams by ensuring that commitments made by governments are kept, according to the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Saber Chowdhury was in New York this week for IPU's Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament. The focus was on "building the world people want" in the context of the new Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs. Stephanie Coutrix met with the Bangladeshi official and began by asking him what makes the IPU conference different from other UN meetings.

The UN Secretary-General is in China this week to take part in events marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The UN is commemorating this milestone as 1945 was also the year the organization was established.The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra recently performed in New York in a concert marking the anniversary. Ana Carmo has more.

Men's involvement key to achieving gender equality

Women must partner with men to eliminate the cultural barriers to achieving gender equality, according to Fiji's first woman Speaker of Parliament. Jiko Luveni said gender parity must be presented to men in a "palatable" way in societies where traditional roles for women are deeply entrenched. Siobhán Garside caught up with her on the sidelines of the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
