Continued international engagement in Afghanistan is critical to avoid waves of people from leaving the country, the top UN official there has stated. Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says Afghans are counting on the support of the international community as they face ongoing security, economic and political challenges. Mr Haysom told me why Afghanistan deserves peace after three decades of conflict.

Foster compassion through music: Yo Yo Ma

Compassion can be fostered across the world through music according to the UN Messenger of Peace, and internationally-renowned cellist, Yo Yo Ma. He has been at UN headquarters in New York, to mark the International Day of Peace celebrated annually on 21 September. Mr Ma performed for students attending the annual Peace Bell ceremony, along with fellow Messengers of Peace. Cristina Silveiro, asked Yo-Yo Ma, how music could best contribute to a more peaceful world.

Young Asians look to the future at the UN Peoples Hub

Young Asian people are voicing their hopes and fears for the future, meeting UN leaders face to face this week inside a new interactive "Peoples Hub". Situated at UN headquarters in New York, the event space which has been created to coincide with the 70th session of the General Assembly, is focused on giving young people a multi-media experience, where they can also air their views. The hub is a joint venture between the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Millennium Campaign, and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). Matthew Wells spoke to two young Asian delegates from the non-profit organization, Save The Children, just after the official opening of hub.
