Good governance and democracy "non-negotiable", says IPU chief

Good governance and democracy are "non-negotiable" and must be implemented across all regions of the world with the help of parliamentarians. That's according to the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, who was in New York this week for the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament. Cristina Silveiro caught up with Mr Chungong who's from Cameroon and is the first African and the first non-European to be elected Secretary General in the IPU's 126-year history.

The peace deal signed at the end of August in South Sudan will allow the nation to focus on development, according to a senior government official. Manasseh Magok Rundial, the Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly, also participated in the conference organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Ana Carmo asked him about the inherent challenges of building a democracy in the world's youngest country.

Smooth political transition key to successful elections in CAR

The Central African Republic (CAR) needs a smooth political transition to ensure upcoming elections are carried out successfully. That's according to Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite of Lithuania, Chair of the committee set up by the UN Security Council in December 2013 to oversee an arms embargo and subsequent assets freeze placed on the country.On Sunday, CAR's transitional council adopted a constitution designed to form the base of a new government. Legislative and presidential elections are planned for mid-October.Ms Murmokaite visited the strife-torn country last week to meet with officials from the government, civil society and the UN's mission there, MINUSCA. She spoke to Maha Fayek about the political transition and the arms embargo imposed on CAR.
