Russia announced Monday it wanted to see an end to fighting in Syria and called for action against terrorists who it called the biggest threat to regional stability.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Russian delegation suggested that local forces should fight extremists, supported by the international community.

The development comes after a high-level UN probe told the assembly how terrible human rights violations are still committed by forces loyal to President Bashar Al Assad and non-state actors.
