A deadly attack on peacekeepers in Darfur on Sunday has been condemned by the UN Secretary-General.

A South African peacekeeper was killed and four of his colleagues injured in the incident, which took place near the town of Mellit in North Darfur.

Dianne Penn reports.

The peacekeepers with the African Union-United Nations operation in Darfur, UNAMID, were escorting a logistics convoy when they came under attack, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed to the Sudanese authorities to investigate the incident and to bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement, Mr Ban called on warring parties in Darfur to respect the integrity of the peacekeeping force.

He also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier, and to the government and people of South Africa.
