Southern Africa to benefit from new global goals

King Mswati III of Swaziland has appealed to the UN to continue helping Africa emerge from the cycle of poverty and disease.

The King was speaking to world leaders at the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly.

He said his country in southern Africa would benefit from the introduction of the new sustainable development goals agreed by the international community on Friday.

"We have good reason to anticipate a sustainable transformation of nations over the next 15 years,"

Change "vitally necessary" says Rwandan President

Change is coming and it is vitally necessary, the President of Rwanda has told the UN General Assembly.

He urged the international community to not only pledge commitment to the new development goals but to acknowledge that their bold targets will only be reached if all countries work together.

Here's Rwandan President, Paul Kagame.

"Our task is to settle the future not the past. Change is coming and it is necessary. No one can manage it alone. And the Global Goals rightly recognize our mutual interdependence,"

"Reliable mechanisms" needed for new goals

Meanwhile, the Tanzanian President has told world leaders that he hopes the new goals will include what he called "reliable mechanisms" to ensure that work is implemented and progress is monitored.

Jakaya Kikwete said a lack of those mechanisms were responsible for what he described as the "short falls in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals or MDGs.

Those anti-poverty targets are due to expire at the end of this year and will be replaced by the global goals, also known as the SDGs.
