World urged to protect climate as it did ozone layer

The international community should protect the climate in the same way that it has preserved the ozone layer, the UN Secretary-General has urged on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

Ban Ki-moon said the 1985 Montreal Protocol which phased out the production and consumption of chemicals that had torn a hole in the ozone layer should inspire people to act to tackle climate change.

Mr Ban said up to 2 million cases of skin cancer may be prevented every year due to the expected recovery by mid-century of the ozone layer.

Ozone protects people from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

World leaders will gather at the UN next week to adopt a sustainable development agenda for the next 15 years and in Paris in December to forge a global climate change accord.

Attacks against IDP camps in Nigeria condemned

Attacks on a camp for some 32,000 internally displaced people, IDPs, in north-eastern Nigeria have been strongly condemned by the UN special rapporteur on the human rights of IDPs.

At least seven people were killed and 14 others injured on 11 September by a suicide bombing at the Malkohi camp in Yola, in Adamawa State.

Chaloka Beyani welcomed the government's condemnation of the attack and said those responsible must be held to account.

The attack is the first of its kind since the crisis fuelled by Boko Haram's violent insurgency escalated in northern Nigeria in 2013.

Uzbekistan to receive UN aid for sustainable development

Uzbekistan will receive technical support from the UN over the next five years for sustainable development and energy efficiency projects.

The UN Economic Commission for Europe, UNECE, has signed an agreement to provide assistance for national sustainable forestry management and energy efficient housing projects.

The Commission will also help the Central Asian nation develop policies on equitable access to water and sanitation, and on tackling transboundary air pollution.
