France and Bulgaria urged to stop evicting Roma

France and Bulgaria are being urged by the UN Human Rights High Commissioner to halt the forced evictions of Roma and Travellers, two itinerant ethnic groups.

And 150 Roma in France were told to leave a shantytown in La Courneuve municipality in late August.

UN Human Rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said similar actions have also taken place in other European countries in recent years.

His office has been working with European authorities and civil society groups to raise awareness about the issue and the need to provide alternative housing solutions for these communities.
