Two UN agencies are urging parents to promptly vaccinate their children against the infectious disease which can cause paralysis or even death.

Committee on Disabled says "record" online audience followed its deliberations

Six countries and the European Union presented reports on how they are implementing a 2006 Convention aimed at combating stereotypes and prejudices.

The United Nations committee said the online audience for its two-weeks of deliberations had reached "record numbers."

Confront human suffering with more "charitable acts"

People everywhere are being asked by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to volunteer and "act charitably" this Saturday as a means to address suffering around the globe.

Mr Ban's call is being made to mark the International Day of Charity on 5 September.

The date coincides with the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to overcome poverty.

The Secretary-General said charities play "an increasingly vital role" particularly in this current moment when there are more refugees and displaced people than at any time in the last 70 years.
